Transport survey update
Your Voice - helping to shape our transport plans
speech bubble
We would like to say thank you to everyone who completed our recent Transport Survey to help us understand some of the ideas and concerns staff and patients have when it comes to travelling to hospital. We received a total of 74 responses from staff, patients and the public; the insight gathered will be used, alongside feedback from ongoing engagement with patients and staff, to shape our Transport Action Plan.

Staff told us their biggest challenges when travelling to work were:
  • Lack of parking – many have to search for alternative parking off site or utilise public transport
  • Lack of available staff transport options during unsociable hours and for those who live more rurally or are working cross-site
  • The cost of public transport and hospital parking are both expensive
“Travelling to work would be easier if staff had better parking, sometimes you cannot park so have to leave home 20 minutes earlier in case you have to wait for a space.”

“Cheaper parking with more availability - particularly when travelling between sites during the day.”

“Increased frequency of buses and also cross-city routes rather than all services radiating from the city centre.”

Patients and members of the public told us the things they find challenging when travelling to hospital for treatment or care are:
  • Poor transport links, particularly from rural villages to hospitals
  • Services not being available at all hospitals meaning people some must travel further
  • A lack of choice of appointment times
  • The availability of hospital transport and facilities for disabled people
“Not to have to go through hoops to get transport”

“Travelling to hospital would be easier if we had more choice in appointment times, outside school times”

“Getting to hospital would be easier with more local services”

“To have more patient transport vehicles, not only one ambulance, but a wheelchair accessible vehicles”

Some of the ideas we are exploring in response to feedback gathered include:
  • Exploring how we could improve staff shuttle bus services between hospitals and potentially open this service to patients and families to provide a helpful transport option.
  • Developing options for family accommodation for families with poorly children having to stay in hospital to provide more comfortable environments.
  • Working with local authorities to review public transport routes and explore park and ride opportunities to improve public transport options.

Staff engagement update
Last year we ran four staff drop-in sessions where we received some invaluable feedback. We asked staff if they had any worries or concerns, if they had any ideas on how we could address these concerns, and what must we get right for them.

Staff told us they felt...
  • Under pressure with teams being understaffed and tired out
  • Concerned about potential impacts for patients and staff if services were to move
  • Worried about the future of workforce
  • That more staff training would be beneficial
  • Appreciative of the opportunity to be involved and find out more information around the programme and potential plans
All the feedback received from engaging with staff will be used to inform our Integrated Impact Assessment and will help us mitigate against impacts of any potential changes.

We will continue to talk to staff over the coming months. If you would like to ask a question, raise a concern or share any ideas with the Humber Acute Services team, get in touch by clicking here.
Get Involved
Can you help?
We have been listening to feedback and ideas from people across the Humber over the past 18 months and these have really helped to influence our emerging ideas.

As we develop these ideas for how services could look in the future, we will be continuing to reach out to particular groups within our community, to help us better understand how they may be impacted by any potential changes to acute hospital services. Throughout our work we are seeking to listen to all communities and individuals and reduce health inequalities in the Humber area.

The groups we would particularly like to engage with include:
  • People living with serious and enduring mental illness
  • People living with poor mental health, including parents and carers.
  • Adults and children with learning disabilities or difficulties, including parents and carers.
  • People from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds
  • People who identify as LGBTQ+
  • People affected by homelessness.
How can you help?
  • Do you work with or support any of these groups, or know someone who does?
  • Do you know of any pre-existing groups we could attend?
  • Would you like to be involved and represent the voices of the people you work with?
If you answer 'yes' to any of the above, then please click here to register your interest in hosting or supporting a focus group or other engagement activity over the coming months.
