Welcome to your Stakeholder Update...
ENWL colleagues prepared for storm Agnes
Although we have experienced a number of episodes of bad weather over the summer, this past week has seen the season's first named storm: Storm Agnes. We experienced 16 high-voltage (HV) faults. Ten of these, affecting 1,500 customers, were restored within three minutes by the automation we’ve invested in our network. More of this technology will be rolled out over the coming years as part of our RIIO-ED2 investment, helping even more customers in the future. Engineers also worked through the night on the other six HV faults to manually restore power to 2,700 customers.

You will have seen the additional communication that we sent out and hope you found the information useful, including our top tips for being prepared in a power cut. We aim to keep you informed around major events; please let us know what you think at stakeholderengagement@enwl.co.uk

Below you will also find details of our Take Charge campaign providing energy and money advise to customers.

Today we will be a headline sponsor at the Greater Manchester Green Summit. Our Chief Executive, Ian Smyth, will be taking part in a panel Q&A with Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and other sector leaders. The Green Summit is an important event as we enable the infrastructure for future growth across the region. The ENWL team hope to see some of you at our exhibition stand at this sold-out event.

Event season is now upon us and we have details of a number of opportunities to influence the industry. However, we are particularly delighted to launch registrations for this year's annual regional stakeholder workshops in November. This year we are hosting three events across the region focussing on how we gather and use strategic investment and development information to plan and manage future electricity demand, and how this links to getting you connected to the network. All stakeholders are welcome, however, we are particularly keen to meet with local authority, social housing and major connections stakeholders.

In this month's newsletter...

1. We invite you to register for our annual regional stakeholder workshops
2. Next week we will officially launch our new Take Charge campaign
3. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) will be hosting an in-person event in Manchester on Wednesday 22 November
4. The Application Portal for Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme Phase 3c is expected to open on Tuesday 10 October, 2pm.
5. Join us at National Grid Electricity Transmission’s North West regional event on 10 October
6. There's an autumn update from Carbon Literacy for Local Authorities
7. Plus a roundup of all the latest news...

DESNZ holding Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) Phase 3 event for UK industry
DESNZ logo
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) will be hosting an in-person event in Manchester on Wednesday 22 November 2023 to showcase some of the projects funded in Phase 2 of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF). The event will also present the Government’s response to the recent IETF Phase 3 consultation.

The IETF supports businesses with high energy use to transition to a low carbon future, and to cut their energy bills and carbon emissions through increased energy efficiency and decarbonisation relating to the industrial process itself. It is a crucial part of the Government’s strategy for tackling climate change and reaching Net Zero by 2050.

This was demonstrated by the announcement in the recent Powering up Britain publication that the Government will launch Phase 3 of the IETF, worth up to £185 million for UK businesses, in early 2024.

The IETF Technology Showcase event will include an opportunity to hear from industrial sites who are deploying technologies to reduce their energy demand and carbon emissions with support from the IETF.

Public Sector decarbonisation scheme: delivery of projects
Phase 3 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, worth £1.425bn, was launched by Salix on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in 2021. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme provides grants for public sector bodies to fund heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency measures.

For Phase 3c of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, an additional financial year of funding has been granted by the Department. This funding increases the value of the overall funding to the scheme and will enable Phase 3c projects to deliver across two financial years.

Phase 3c of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme has up to £230 million available in 2024/25. The budget available in 2025/26 will be confirmed this autumn though applicants should assume a broadly balanced profile across 2024/25 and 2025/26.

The Application Portal for Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme Phase 3c is expected to open on Tuesday 10 October, 2pm.

Industry event - National Grid Electricity Transmission: Pathway to Net Zero on 10 October
As a distribution network operator (DNO), we are part of the wider electricity network, with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) playing a vital role in getting the electricity from power stations and other generators to our network. NGET are hosting a series of workshops that are regionally focused, in locations across their network, to give key stakeholders an opportunity to inform their investment plans. We will be joining them at their North West workshop on 10 October where topics for discussion will include:
  • What stakeholders need from the transmission network and how they can work in partnership to deliver this
  • NGET’s current best view of where regional investment will be required
  • How NGET can adopt a whole system approach to network planning
  • Connections Reform: how NGET can enable faster connections to meet Net Zero
We do hope to see you there, please click on the appropriate link(s) below to register.

Carbon Literacy for Local Authorities - Autumn Update
carbon literacy project logo
While the Government's revision of its Net Zero policies hits the headlines, local government continues to lead by example, taking meaningful action on the climate crisis despite the limited resources made available to them.

Many are now expanding Carbon Literacy training to external audiences, using their influencing and convening powers to drive low-carbon culture change across their localities.

• Over 12,000 local authority staff are now certified as Carbon Literate across 265 councils
• 6,000 of these were certified using the Local Authorities Toolkit
• There are now 43 Bronze, 4 Silver and 1 Gold Carbon Literate local authorities
