Welcome to Blueprint

Welcome to July's edition of Blueprint.

Following on from the funding news in May, we are beginning to grow the redevelopment team.

The same can also be said of the New Hospital Programme (NHP), which is expanding as this exciting national initiative gathers pace.

Hospital 2.0
We are learning more about ‘Hospital 2.0’ – a standardised approach, both in terms of construction and of procurement.

At the heart of Hospital 2.0 is modern methods of construction (MMC) – an approach that will be integrated from the supply chain to the finished building, with the aim of delivering efficiency as well as good quality design.

Reducing the range of fixtures and fittings will streamline how the hospitals of the future will look and feel – an example of this is cutting the number of door types from around 27,000 to 700!

The vision is for an ‘NHS kit-of-parts’ and a focus on prefabrication to speed up the build and reduce cost.

Whilst the hospitals in the NHP will all differ in terms of size, shape and site, they will share common approaches regarding space and sustainability standards and the importance of technology.

NHP chief programme officer Morag Stuart said. “We are genuinely trying to transform a very significant part of the NHS system. Half of what we’re doing is a transformation programme, and the other half is an infrastructure programme.”

Robots
At Watford, the building will be a fresh start and an exciting opportunity to move from spending money on repairs and onto other things, like... robots!

Did you know that our plans include automated guided vehicles (AGV) to carry laundry and other items? AGVs, which are powered by electricity, operate successfully in other hospitals and are an example of how automation can be used in healthcare.

Enabling works at St Albans City Hospital
Progress is well underway to get ready for the necessary construction and refurbishment required to deliver the enhanced diagnostic and theatre facilities at St Albans City Hospital. This does mean that the site is very busy.

We are implementing measures to reduce cars on site, such as asking contractors to park off site, looking at whether some staff can work from home or from other sites and researching park and ride and staff shuttle bus options. But we would be grateful if you could please allow extra time if you are travelling to this site by car. Thank you.
